The Bible is God’s revealed, desired will for how we are to live. It brings us pilgrims, journeying to the celestial city, clarity in the midst of confusion and affords us calm while being tossed around in a sea of social media white noise. I have found it amazing how even one verse when remembered can focus my affections back to the sovereignty of God and the saving grace of His Son Jesus. When my friend Dave Edwards shared with me the practice of holding on to one verse that can serve as a tool to center one’s thinking onto Jesus, I asked if he would write a blog sharing his idea.

If you would like to read further on the life verse concept, then I would strongly encourage you to pick Dave’s latest book title, ‘Life Verse: Discovering the Power of Scripture in your Story.

– Brent Crowe (@brentacrowe)

My life verse has taken a lot of beating, but like anything well made, it has stood the test of time. The events, which led me to the discovery of my life verse, began with my family. Dad had moved out, and as the years passed by, school got tougher for me and my grades showed it.  I was labeled as a slow learner; my confidence took a blow.  If I were called on to read aloud, I would anxiously break into a cold sweat.  Questions on test would cause my mind to go blank.  I was a slow learner without a promising educational career. With specialized classes, tutoring clinics, and counseling, my days in school were a struggle.  All the experts reinforced the label, and labels have a way of sticking and shaping our stories.

It was my Mom’s teacher-friend that discovered I had dyslexia. This was an obstacle but not a death sentence. It meant learning was a slow and tedious process, but I pushed on. It was during this season of fighting labels and dyslexia that I found my life verse.

During my season of discovery, I was reading the book of Deuteronomy where Moses declares his final words about the faithfulness of God. It was slow reading for me but my eyes took in the words. Those words became sentences and sentences formed into thoughts. I read the Book of Deuteronomy for months. I simply read, listened and prayed, “Lord let your word come alive in me.” Then it happened, something reached out from the ink and paper and grabbed my heart. The words suddenly sounded personal; they were alive in that moment.  It was as if the words were written right to me.

I had discovered my life verse: “but the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you.” Deuteronomy 23:5

This verse fits all the standards of a life verse;

  • It is broad enough to include all of life.
  • Always takes the facts into account.
  • It is personal.
  • It forms character.
  • It summarizes your life.
  • It gives the past, present and future a redemptive focus.
  • It proclaimed the gospel.
  • It connects you to the fullness of God.
  • It protects us from believing that life is up to us.

The more I read this verse-the more my life intertwined with its words. Choosing God’s story over our old story means that life can be reshaped and recast into a journey of hope.

What incredible assurance! What a perfect verse for a dyslexic. Where life looks like it works against us, God reverses the curses and causes circumstances to work for our ultimate good. My three greatest fears were reading, writing and public speaking. For the past 20 years, I’ve spent my life doing the three things I thought I could never do. My life verse has taught me that limitations can never limit God.

So let me ask you, have you discovered your life verse?
